Lost 165 pounds between November 29, 2009, and November 29, 2011

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Two years ago today, I initiated a major, definitely overdue change in my eating habits.  On November 29, 2009, I was the heaviest of my life, and was determined I would immediately start a major weight loss with a goal of loosing a minimum of 150 pounds.  Happily, I attained that weight loss goal in August 2011.  I have lost another 15 pounds or so since that time, and proudly report that I weigh 165 pounds less on November 29, 2011 than I did on November 29, 2009.

As ecstatic as I am about this major accomplishment of loosing over 150 pounds, I must ensure I do not loose focus, and gain a large portion of it back, or horror of horrors, gain it all back.

I have managed to loose all this weight by eliminating desserts, in-between meal snacks, popcorn / candy at the movies, and limiting my evening snack to an apple.  I still have my main meal at my favorite restaurants, and order my favorite menu selections without concern about calories, or other items dieters usually worry about.  By giving myself this freedom to order what I want at my main meal (minus dessert of course), I am not overly deprived, and have a better chance of keeping the weight off permanently.  Of course, other than the main meal, I do follow my new changes strictly. Strictly does not mean total abstinence. I do have an occasional dessert, or popcorn when celebrating a holiday, birthday, or reaching a weight loss milestone; however, these intentional deviations are indeed just occasional. Today, I had a delicious brownie sundae for dessert to celebrate my successful two year weight loss, but tomorrow, back to the no dessert policy.

I am surprised I was able to loose all my desired weight without making additional eating modifications.

Achieved my goal – lost 150 pounds

Monday, August 15th, 2011

My mid-month weigh-in revealed a loss of 153 pounds since November 29, 2009.  I am ecstatic that I achieved my goal of losing 150 pounds.  I am surprised that I was able to loose 150 pounds by just eliminating in-between meal snacks, desserts, popcorn / candy at movies, and limiting my evening snack to an apple, or other fruit.

My biggest challenge now is to ensure I do not gain the weight back.  All my previous major weight losses unfortunately ended with my gaining all the weight back along with a substantial bonus. I am determined not to repeat the past mistakes, and will automatically morph into weight reduction mode again whenever I gain more than a few pounds.

Gained 2 pounds since the end of last month, but not too concerned – have lost 142 pounds since November 29, 2009

Friday, July 15th, 2011

I have lost 142 pounds since November 29, 2009.

My mid-month weigh-in revealed a gain of 2 pounds since the end of last month.  Of course, I am concerned about any weight gain, but am not too concerned with this two pound gain.  I have been fighting a bit of a stomach bug during this time, and past experience has demonstrated that my weight fluctuates greatly until the stomach flu finally departs.  If my weigh-in had been on the 17th vs. the 15th, I  would have been down a couple of pounds since end of last month rather than gained a couple of pounds.

Once the stomach flu runs its course, I will be very concerned about a 2 pound gain, but since I know the reason for this gain, I am not too concerned.

Tempus Fugit Redux – 7 years since my last workday

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Hard to believe that another year has flown by since my last workday.  My official retirement date is June 30; however, I had time I had to use before I retired.

I am enjoying my retirement immensely.  My main project of reviewing all the paper / stuff I gathered over the years, and discarding most of it has been neglected.  I am OK with the lack of progress because the reasons for the neglect are I go out every day, and am enjoying myself so much every day.

One goal I have finally made great progress on is loosing substantial weight.  Since November 29, 2009, I have lost 143 pounds.  I weigh about 100 pounds less than I did on my last workday 7 years ago.  Of course, I am ecstatic with this loss.  When I reach the 150 pounds lost goal, I will evaluate whether I should continue loosing, or start a permanent maintenance mode.

During my 8th year of retirement, I will concentrate on reviewing all the “stuff” I accumulated over the years, and hopefully shred / discard most of it.

The other area I have to pay attention to is my current spending like the proverbial drunken sailer on electronic gadgets. I must significantly reduce my current spending for the latest electronic toys.

Overall, I have been blessed with a quality, enjoyable retirement.

Lost another 2 pounds for a total of 143 pounds

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

My mid-month weigh-in revealed another 2 pounds shed for a total of 143 pounds lost since November 29, 2009.
I am ecstatic with the weight loss, and although the rate of loss has slowed, surprised I am still loosing since I still eat my favorite meals at my favorite restaurants.  I do watch what I eat outside of my combined lunch / dinner.

I am only 7 pounds away from my initial weight loss goal of 150 pounds.  When I reach that major milestone, I will evaluate whether I should continue loosing, or start a permanent maintenance mode.

Lost 141 pounds between November 29, 2009, and May 31, 2011

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

My end of month weigh-in revealed a loss of another 2 pounds since mid-month, 6 pounds for the month of May, and 141 pounds lost since November 29, 2009. I am definitlely ecstatic about this loss particularly since I am so close to my initial target of 150 pounds lost. Although the rate of weight loss has slowed, I am still surprised at how much, and how quickly I am still loosing weight since I still eat my favorite meals at my favorite restaurants. All this weight lost by just eliminating desserts, candy / popcorn at movies, in-between meal snacks, and limiting my evening snack to an apple; I am ecstatic, and very pleasantly surprised.

When I reach the 150 pounds lost goal, I will do another evaluation to ascertain if I need to loose more weight, or start the all important maintenance mode. I know from previous weight losses that the maintenance mode is vital, and unfortunately, my prior maintenance modes have been complete failures. I did fine loosing all the weight I wanted before, and then totally blew it by gaining all the lost weight back plus a substantial bonus. I am determined that this time, I will cap my record weight loss with a successful maintenance mode.

Lost another 4 pounds for a total of 139 pounds lost since November 29. 2009

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

My mid-month weigh-in revealed a loss of another 4 pounds since the end of last month for a total loss of 139 pounds since I started this major weight loss campaign on November 29, 2009. My weight loss rate had slowed in the prior two months, but seems to be increasing again which is surprising since I am getting close to my weight loss goal. When I started this campaign, my goal was to loose 150 pounds which is only 11 pounds away. My primary care doctor would like 162 or so. Frankly, I will be ecstatic when I reach the 150 pounds lost milestone, and if I do not reach 162, I’ll be OK as long as I do not gain any back after I achieve the 150 pound loss.

What is still surprising to me is I have lost all this weight by only eliminating desserts, popcorn / candy at movies, and in-between meal snacks while limiting my evening snack to an apple. I have been faithful to this new campaign, and only have a dessert, popcorn etc when I am celebrating a milestone, or my birthday / holiday. I had anticipated making additional major changes as the weight melted off, but so far, no need for additional changes. I still have my favorite menu selections at my favorite restaurants, the only change is eliminating the desserts.

As ecstatic as I am about the loss, my main goals must be to loose the additional 11 pounds, and even more important, keep the weight off this time which I failed to do when I finished previous substantial weight losses.

Lost 135 pounds since November 29, 2009

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

My end of month weigh-in revealed a loss of 135 pounds since November 29, 2009. If you follow this blog, you will know that I am the same weight as April 15th. I am not concerned about the lack of shedding more pounds since the last report because I celebrated my birthday during this period. If I can celebrate my birthday without gaining weight, I am happy. That being said, I must focus again on my weight to ensure my weight loss resumes in May now that my birthday celebration is over.

Lost 135 Pounds since November 29, 2009

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Lost 135 pounds since November 29, 2009. Only lost 1 pound since end of March, but did loose 4 pounds since March 15. I had gained a few pounds the first week of April, but managed a net loss of 1 pound by the 15th.

It will be difficult to loose next 25, but I will. Now that I am near the end of my massive weight loss saga, I am not in a hurry, just want a steady loss.

Lost 134 pounds since November 29, 2009

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Lost 3 pounds since the middle of March for a total loss of 134 pounds since November 29, 2009. My rate of loss is slowing which is to be expected since I am getting close to maintenance mode. I do have to be careful to ensure my losses continue, albeit at a slower rate, and not allow a weight gain to creep up on me like it did with prior weight losses. I have to evaluate any eating changes because even a slight increase in daily consumption can result in a major weight loss over time.

I have rediscovered the tastiness of Tootsie Roll Pops after about a 40 year hiatus. As long as my intake is moderate, and does not adversely impact my weight loss, it will be OK; however, I will watch closely because I know what it can lead to from past negative experiences with minor additions to my daily intake.

I would like to loose another 16 pounds or so, and then determine if I wish to continue the loss, or start a maintenance mode.
