107 pounds lost since November 29, 2009

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

My end of month weigh-in revealed a loss of 107 pounds since November 29, 2009. As I approach the one year anniversary of my weight loss start, I am thrilled I have officially joined the “lost over 100 pounds club”, and achieved this major accomplishment in less than a year. As thrilled as I am, I have about 43 more pounds to loose, and realize the final 43 pounds may be more difficult to loose than the previous 107 pounds.

My past weight loss history has taught me that the final pounds you loose are the most difficult to loose. The only task more difficult is keeping the weight off once you achieve you loss goal. I know from too many personal experiences that it is very easy to regain all the weight you lost plus a 10 to 20 pounds bonus. I know because I have endured that cycle too many times.

I will focus, and make any necessary changes to achieve a total weight loss of 150 pounds.

“Saw 3D” is OK for its genre

“Saw 3D”

2 1/2 out of 5 stars
Hesitant to see since my least favorite genre.
Probably best of Saw series, but for me, that is not saying much.
Genre does not appeal to me, find most boring.  This was less boring than most for this genre.

If you like the horror / slasher genre, you will probably enjoy this movie in 3D.

“The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” is excellent

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

5 out of 5 stars

I had seen the first two movies in this series, and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Although I could probably get a DVD, I wanted to see this movie on the big screen.
The movie cleared up a lot of loose ends from previous two movies.
Acting was exceptional, same major stars as previous two movies.
Minimum CGI, great story, time passed quickly, maintained interest.
Swedish with English sub-titles, but not a problem since the movie is so interesting.

If you have seen the previous movies, and / or are a fan of the novels they are based on, see this movie.

“Unstoppable” is good

“Unstoppable”

3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Attended preview today.
Lots of action, very good CGI, but story a bit too predictable.
Too much corporate bashing, getting kind of old hat in the movies.
Denzel Washington,  and Chris Pine work well together, nice chemistry on screen.
Like most guys my age, I have a fondness for trains which favored my enjoying this movie.

“Das Rheingold” Met Opera Encore was OK

“Das Rheingold”

2 1/2 out of 5 stars

If you read my prior posts, I have finally realized I am not an opera fan.
Was near Fenway tonight, so took in “Das Rheingold” encore at Regal Fenway.
Although I respect the immense talent of the opera stars, I find the format boring, and too drawn out for most of the performance.

Tonight’s opera did not change my opinion that opera is not for me,

“The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event” was excellent

“The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event”

5 out of 5 stars

Nice to see this movie on big screen again.
Exceptional job on digital restoration, both picture, and sound.
Was a bit concerned about the “sing along” tag, but very few of the audience sang a few bars – no distraction.
IMO, this movie is a musical classic, and it is nice to see such a restoration before the original fades away.
15 minute introductory clip explaining history of movie, and restoration was very interesting as well.
If this is playing at a theatre near you, see it.

“Catfish” is pretty good

“Catfish”

2 1/2 out of 5 stars

I had not seen “Catfish” since the trailers had left me unimpressed.  I had a movie reward which was about to expire, and the reward cannot be used the first 10 days of a release.  I used it for “Catfish” since there was no other choice.

Although it did not make my list of best 2010 movies, it was better than anticipated.

The movie is a documentary about an unannounced visit to a distant Facebook friend, and how different the reality is vs. the online profile / persona.  Basically, a complete lie figuring they were about 1K miles apart, and would never meet.  I am shocked, people lie in their online profile, and emails / texts. 😉

“Paranormal Activity 2” was a waste of money for me

“Paranormal Activity”2

1/2 star out of 5 stars

I did not like the original “Paranormal Activity”.  When I saw the trailers for the sequel, I put it on my “no way will I see this” list.  Wish it remained there.  I was dowtown today, and “Paranormal Activity 2” was the only movie I had not seen, so I gave in.

10 mintes of thrills, and 80 minutes of boredom.

I paid the IMAX premium also so I feel even more like I was ripped of by this movie.

If there is another sequel, it will definitely remain on the “never see this movie” list.

“Hereafter” is good

“Hereafter”

3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Not a fan of Matt Damon, and this movie has not changed that opinion.

I am a fan of Clint Eastwood, and he did a fine directing job.

The young actor who played Marcus was excellent, kudos to him, should have a solid acting future.

The CGI for the tsunami scene was top notch.

Movie was interesting, time passed quickly, acting overall was fine, and although a bit weird, movie was enjoyable.

“Tamara Drewe” is good

“Tamara Drewe”

3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Enjoyable British comedy.  Like many British comedies, humorous, but no “roll in the aisle” scenes.

All actors (none I recognized) gave fine performances.

Beautiful British countryside scenes enhanced visual experience.

If you like humorous, light comedies, give “Tamara Drewe” a look.
