Saw “Machete” at the Boston Common. The movie is good overall with a plethora of blood, action, and severed body parts. There are several mainstream Hollywood stars in this movie; I was particularly surprised to see Robert De Niro in this movie. I am a huge fan of Robert De Niro, and as expected, he did his usual top notch acting job. Since he played a very corrupt, bigoted state senator, I wish he had declined the role. Can’t really explain, I just wish he had said no to this role even though he did his usual superb job.
The movie is very one-sided politically about a very sensitive issue in the USA at this time. Although it would have been nice to see a bit more even-handiness with the issue, it is a movie, not a documentary, so anything goes I guess. I also thought they went a bit overboard with the Catholic Church scenes as well. Again, just a movie.
If you like movies with lots of blood, gore, and severed body parts, you will definitely like this movie.

I wanted to see “Machete”, but it ended at about the same time the Sox game would be getting out up the street at Fenway. With mixed feelings, I saw “Going the Distance”. Mixed feelings because I like Drew Barrymore, but find Justin Long a bit annoying. Whenever I see Justin in a movie, I see him as the annoying, pretentious, arrogant, smug Mac guy in the Apple commercial. As expected, I liked Drew in this movie, and didn’t care for Justin.
For this genre, the movie was OK. I probably would have enjoyed it more with a different male lead actor.

I am not a fan of George Clooney; however, I thought he was good in this movie. Unfortunately, I found the movie a bit boring, and dull. The story was not very interesting, I was constantly checking my watch. The Italian countryside was beautiful. Other than the scenery, and Clooney’s performance, the movie was dull, and boring at least for me.

My second entree at the Landmark Kendall was “Centurion”, a 2nd century Roman period action piece. I generally enjoy period piece movies, and this was no exception. The story relates the Roman Legion’s defeat by the Pics of Britian using guerilla tactics. In the end, after a long chase scene, only one Roman soldier, the Centurion, survives.
The movie has an interesting storyline with lots of blood / action. If you like action movies, or period pieces, check this movie out.

Saw “Flipped” at the Landmark Kendall. The movie is a heart warming story of a “love / hate” relationship between a young boy and girl which continues into the teen years. As expected, this movie has a happy ending as the relationship turns to teen romance. I don’t see any “Oscars” in this movie’s future, but it is a nice, enjoyable movie.
I loved the 50′s / 60′s era music (definitely my favorite music other than Sinatra), and the pristine condition 57 Bel Air’s with a 59 Impala complete with skirts / dual rear antennas along for the ride.

If you have read my prior posts, and my Windows Phone 7 page, you know I am very disappointed that Microsoft abandoned the poweruser with their new phone OS. Today I abandoned Microsoft’s mobile OS. I upgraded my Sprint Touch Pro to a new Sprint Epic 4G Android. With Microsoft’s abandonment of the poweruser, Android is the logical choice since the iPhone is so restricted. Boston does not have 4G yet, but is scheduled for the 4G upgrade next month.
One of the reasons I delayed switching from Windows Mobile to Android was the lack of a HanDBase database client for Android. I update several databases daily, so HanDBase is a critical app for me. Although not available yet, the HanDBase site indicates an Android client should be available in the near future. That is all the info I needed to cement my platform switch to Android. In the interim, I will use my current Windows Mobile devices to update the databases.
I am familiar with the Galaxy S devices since I have a Vibrant as well. I am impressed with the hardware keyboard on the Epic, and as with the Vibrant, the Super AMOLED screen is exceptional.
More updates to follow.

Saw “Takers” after dinner at the Longhorn. The movie is OK, nothing to write home about. The storyline is pretty good, the casting fine, but sometimes I wondered if I was watching a soap opera rather than a movie. There were a few scenes the audience was laughing at even though the scenes were not humorous, hence the soap opera comment.

When I saw the preview for “The Last Exorcism”, I basically knew I would not like this movie since it is my least favorite genre. Today was a beautiful day so I wanted to sit out, and enjoy the beautiful weather since the weather will be getting cooler at night within a few weeks. When I had satisfied my sitting out urge, the next movie starting was, of course, “The Last Exorcism”. My original assumption was accurate, I did not enjoy this movie. Horror / supernatural genre movies just aren’t my cup of tea, I find them boring, not enjoyable.
If you like this genre, you probably would enjoy this movie. If not, you probably will be bored.

Since I was at the Landmark Kendall for “Mao’s Last Dancer”, my second movie for the evening was “”Patrik, Age 1,5″, a Swedish movie with English subtitles. The movie is a story about a Swedish gay couple who thought they were adopting a year and a half old baby, but the child available for adoption was a 15 year old delinquent, not a 1.5 year old baby as indicated in the notification letter that had a typo. What followed were some good laughs, some very serious moments, and a nice ending. All the performances were excellent, at least as much as you can ascertain with a subtitled movie. Kudos to the actor who played the 15 year old Patrik.
If you like a good story with a few laughs, and don’t mind subtitles, check this out.

I am not a fan of ballet, but the storyline for “Mao’s Last Dancer” looked interesting. I was not disappointed, this movie is excellent. The story maintained my interest, the performances were top notch, little / no CGI, and the ballet scenes were minimal. Although I do not appreciate the artistry of ballet, I do highly respect the fantastic physical shape the dancers have to maintain in order to move the way they do with such grace, and poise. The teacher Chan scene at the end was a fantastic finale.
If you like a good story, and / or you are a fan of ballet, you will enjoy this movie.
